This book is an absolute gem. Looking up "life insurance" on yields mountains of big print, small idea, poorly written books on how to sell life insurance. Not so with this one. Hendrick masterfully communicates the pure theory of life insurance and then chronicles precisely how lies, greed and malfeasance transformed "the noblest enterprise" into a scheme to enrich agents and management by defrauding customers. He comes down hard on the big 3 New York companies - New York Life, Mutual of New York and the Equitable but does so in an even handed and thoroughly convincing way.
The book was written a long time ago and mostly talks about life insurance in from 1850-1900. The irony is that the issues Hendrick discusses in this book are very similar, if not identical, to those bedeviling the life insurance industry today. If nothing else, this book explained to me why life insurance now looks the way it does. It started as something better and transformed into something worse. Hendrick spends an incredible amount of time bashing the Tontine and "deferred dividend" policy structures. Irony of all ironies, those products exist today albeit in different masks. The ideas have not changed. Regulation has only gotten better. The same forces still exist.
Every life insurance professional should read this book.
